EDUCATIONAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT

People are living longer. As age increase, people are more likely to develop different kinds of health problems.  The elderly population, persons aged 65 and over, are more susceptible to certain diseases as they increase in age. Half of U.S. adults over age 65 suffer from at least one common age-related condition.  The elderly adults consist of almost 15% of the U.S. population, which is about one in every seven Americans. Pharmacists are in a vital position to best address the unique medication needs of older adults.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this home study activity, pharmacists will be able to: Explain the etiology and pathophysiology of the following Geriatric Disorders:  Alzheimer’s Disease, Arthritis, Urinary Incontinence, Osteoporosis and Parkinson’s Disease; Describe the epidemiology of each Geriatric Disorder; Recognize the signs and symptoms associated with each of the Geriatric Disorders; Identify ways to diagnose each of the Geriatric Disorders; Select appropriate therapy for each of the Geriatric Disorders; Identify the role of the pharmacist in assisting the elderly population with their medications.
